ICAHM Webinars series 2025

The preservation of archaeological heritage is essential to our
understanding and appreciation of our history, identity and cultural
diversity. However, the challenges of contemporary life – such as
increasing pressure from tourism and climate change – pose
significant obstacles to the management and protection of these
valuable resources.
This cycle of webinars aims to explore and discuss best practices,
strategies and tools for effective management of archaeological
heritage, focusing on three main issues:
archaeological management, accessibility, sustainable tourism.
We invite experts from the fields of archaeology, conservation,
tourism and sustainability to share heir valuable experiences and
approaches that promote a balance between the use and
conservation of heritage, ensuring that its cultural value can be
enjoyed by present and future generations.
In each session we will address fundamental issues such as
protecting archaeological sites from the impacts of tourism,
implementing accessibility policies for a diverse audience, and
promoting sustainable tourism practices that respect and value local
communities and the environment.

“ICOMOS Cultural Tourism Charter 2022 and tourism management at archaeological sites”
The new ICOMOS International Cultural Heritage Tourism Charter was adopted almost unanimously at the 2022 ICOMOS Annual General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand (Resolution AGA 2022/14). Since that time intensive work on translation has progressed quickly and steadily while dedicated regional workshops and related initiatives have also progressed. The presentation will present the updated focus and key objectives of the Charter and examine how the ICOMOS ICAHM Salalah Guidelines for the Management of Public Archaeological Sites (2019) might be developed to integrate the charter’s principles.

“The Role of Archaeology in Tourism in the Portuguese Inland Regions: The Case of Serpa”
ArqueoLoci is a collaborative network dedicated to the promotion of archaeological tourism. Focusing on the creation of synergies between archaeological heritage and tourism, it stands out as a project that promotes the revitalisation of inland areas. This study examines the municipality of Serpa, located in the south of Portugal, where, despite the large number of existing archaeological sites, the potential for heritage enhancement with a view to archaeological tourism remains under-utilised. Several projects currently under development, which aim to integrate the recovery of archaeological sites with other assets of this territory, are also discussed.
